These are Original Hand Coloured Plates from the Book, not  copies or modern reproductions

James Sowerby 1757 - 1822 was an English Naturalist and Illustrator who studied Art at The Royal Academy

The 1st Edition of English Botany - was a major publication of British plants issued between 1790 and 1813.The Periodical was published in 36 volumes over 23 years with Engravings of Hand Colored Plates.

The 2nd Edition of English Botany - was published after his death between 1842 to 1854 with restrikes from the original engraved plates so they will have the original earlier dates on the plates at the bottom but were renumbered so the 2nd edition has two plate numbers in the top right corner & are also Hand Colored

The 3rd Edition of English Botany - was published from 1892 the Prints are enlarged Lithographic copies of Sowerbys Original engraved Plates which were then Hand Colored

The Prints are in a fairly good condition for their age of over 100 years, there is some slight foxing and age toning/browning/discoloration  especially to the edges,some small marks, The paper has a darker tone, there is no text on the reverse - Please see photos for condition

Paper is made from wood pulp which contains Lignin, when exposed to light & oxygen lignin reacts to give the paper a yellow apperance, most antique prints will have age toning so will not be "white" in color like modern prints, paper will also age differently so colors will vary in color from print to print
