Garlic chives are edible plants that have a taste like that of onion or garlic. They are grown primarily for ornamental use but also for culinary uses. The whole plant is edible, including the leaves, stalk or scape, and the flowers. Chives are common worldwide and are used as culinary ingredients in many different foods including soups, salsas, potatoes, fish, and much more. They are also frequently used in landscapes for their precious blooms.

Common Name: garlic chives/oriental garlic/Asian chives/Chinese chives/Chinese leek

Scientific Background: Chives are in the family of Amaryllidaceae, along with onions, garlic, and leeks. This plant is also occasionally used in medical practices, used because it has mild effects of what garlic has. It was also once believed that chives hung up on a house would scare off disease evil.

Scientific Name: Allium Schoenoprasum

Blooms/Foliage: Chives grow in long green stalks, also called scapes, with whitish tips. They produce dark green leaves which are hollow and resemble the scapes of the plant. The light white flowers of this plant will brighten up any space.

Hardiness Zones: Chives can grow anywhere but thrive in warm areas with lots of sunlight.

Growth Habit: Chives grow in tall stalks that can reach a height of 12″-20″ high. The flowers of this plant have six petals which are 1-2 centimeters wide.

Exposure: Chives should be planted in an area where they are exposed to full sun.

Water: Chives should be given plenty of water to keep their soil plenty moist.

Spread: Place 4-6 seeds per 6″ or 1-2 seeds every inch.

Soil: Chives do best when planted in soil that is rich in organic matter, but they are tolerant of all soils.

Potential Handling Dangers: Overconsumption of this plant’s edible scapes may result in digestive problems.

Potential Plant Dangers: Deer, maggots, thrips, slugs, and snails are all pests that can potentially harm your chive plant. Rust can also damage this plant.

Helpful Tips: Chives have an insect-repelling property which helps with pests that can interfere with your gardening. When preparing a dish with the flower, pluck the individual flowerets to scatter in the dish for an extra pop of color and flavor. For best production, keep plants free of weeds and cut flowers off so the bulbs will tend to produce more. When harvesting the leaves, cut them at ground level. These plants can also easily be divided to start new plants or moved. To do this just dig around the roots of the plant and plant elsewhere, or divide the plant through the center.
